African Trust conducted a pesticide awareness training session from February 23th to 26th, 2022, targeting small-scale farmers in Laalays, Sahil, Somaliland. The primary objectives of the training were to enhance farmers’ capacity to employ appropriate pesticide usage methods and to raise awareness about the risks associated with chemical pesticides. African Trust advocated for the adoption of Integrated Pest Production Management (IPPM) as an alternative to chemical pesticides, emphasizing the potential health hazards posed by their overuse and misuse, particularly when farmers fail to utilize protective gear such as face masks, gloves, and suits.
This initiative was undertaken by African Trust to bolster the capabilities of farmers, specifically those in Laalays. The response from the farmers was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the timely and impactful intervention. They welcomed AT’s efforts and expressed a desire for similar training sessions and awareness programs in the future.
